Cancer is a disease which is not restricted to any age group. There are hundreds of different types of cancer and they can affect just about any part of the body. Cells in our body divide and multiply according to the body’s needs. However when these cells continue to multiply even though the body doesn’t need them it results in mass growth that is called tumor. This tumor can be benign that is non-cancerous or malignant which is cancerous.
Removal of the cancer cells without causing any harm to the normal, healthy cells is the goal of every treatment. The oncologist recommends the best treatment which depends upon the type of cancer, the stage that it has reached patient’s age and general health.
The four conventional methods of cancer treatments are:
- Surgery: this method is applied to diagnose and treat cancers by removing the cancerous growth through surgery. For those types of cancer which are not curable palliative surgery is an option to lessen pain and discomfort.
- Chemotherapy: this method makes use of drugs to treat cancer. This treatment affects the entire body unlike surgery where only one part of the body is treated. It’s aim is to detect rapidly multiplying cells and eliminate them. Unfortunately our hair follicles and cells lining the stomach also multiply at high rates which are drastically affected by chemotherapy. This results in hair loss and upset stomach. Chemotherapy is usually given in the form of drugs or intravenously.
- Radiation therapy: certain types of energy are used to shrink and remove cancerous cells. The DNA of the cancer cell is impaired which impedes it from multiplying further and it eventually dies as it is very sensitive. The neighboring healthy cells are also damaged during the process but are able to be restored due to their resilience.
- Biologic therapy: biologic therapies work by infusing a drug in the body which interferes and obstructs the biological processes of the tumor that allows them to breed and multiply. These therapies also operate by cutting off the blood supply to the tumor cells which results in their death.
