Obesity has become a major threat and a global health concern of the 21st century. This disease is not restricted to any particular age group or sex. Even infants have fallen to this overwhelming epidemic. Gaining pounds has become easier then losing them. Obesity is the root of other health problems like diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, spinal problems, asthma and some types of cancers.
There is no simple answer to what accounts for calorie imbalance. There are some factors which contribute to this dilemma which are:
- Poor diet: poor diets which are consumed due to convenience like fast foods and junk foods are major factors in contributing to obesity as they are laden with excessive calories.
- Lack of exercise: technology has made possible to obtain anything at the click of a button. This has considerably decreased the movement of human body and physical activity thus promoting the build-up of fat in the body. People now lead a more sedentary lifestyle
- Genetic factors: obesity also occurs due to heredity linkage.
- Psychological factors: some illnesses which are mental or physical call for treatments which can lead to obesity. Similarly when people are stressed or bored they tend to overeat. Emotions and food have an impact a positive or negative impact on each other. Anxiety and depression can also aggrandize eating disorders.
- Age: age is also one of the fundamental elements responsible for obesity. As the person advances in age his body metabolism slows down and fewer calories are required for the build-up of energy in the body.
Fortunately there are options available to combat this disease. The measures include controlling the intake of food and keeping away from oily and fatty cuisines, augmenting the incorporation of raw vegetables and fruits daily, drinking plenty of water and juices and most importantly engaging in physical activity daily. Having an active lifestyle is the first defense mechanism in battling of obesity.
If these methods are not producing any noticeable effect there are other alternatives available which include weight reduction surgeries. Some of these surgeries are liposuction, bariatric surgery, vertical banded gastroplasty, roux-en-y gastric bypass and biliopancreatic diversion.
Whatever option that you elect for it is imperative that you adopt a healthy lifestyle and blend it with exercise and physical activity. Knowing about the factors and the options available can assist you in managing your weight and warding off obesity. This all will require strong will power and determination.
